In vista della prima del musical Lazarus in Gran Bretagna, in programma l’8 novembre al King Cross Theatre di Londra, esce la versione dei brani di David Bowie del cast e della band della produzione originale di New York. Il disco, intitolato Lazarus Cast Album, esce il 21 ottobre per ISO/Columbia Records.
Oltre ai classici di Bowie interpretati dal cast del musical, il disco contiene anche le ultime tre incisioni in studio di David. Prodotte da Bowie e Tony Visconti e registrate con Donny McCaslin e il suo quartetto, la stessa formazione che ha suonato su “Blackstar” di Bowie, queste ultime tre canzoni – No Plan, Killing A Little Time e When I Met You – rappresentano l’ideale completamento delle performance del cast teatrale. L’album include anche la versione di Lazarus contenuta in “Blackstar”.

Il Lazarus Cast Album è prodotto da Henry Hey, direttore musicale dello spettacolo e già collaboratore di Bowie per The Next Day, ed è interpretato da Hall, Caruso, Cristin Miloti, Michael Esper e altri componenti del cast, accompagnati dalla band di 7 elementi formata apposta da Hey per le rappresentazioni newyorkesi del musical.
L’album è stato inciso l’11 gennaio 2016. Entrati in studio di registrazione, i musicisti e il cast sono rimasti sconvolti nell’apprendere della morte di Bowie avvenuta la sera prima, e il disco cattura le loro straordinarie performance ricche di emotività.
L’artwork dell’album è curato da Jonathan Barnbrook, che aveva già lavorato con Bowie per Blackstar, The Next Day, Heathen e Nothing Has Changed.
Scritto da Bowie ed Enda Walsh, diretto da Ivo Van Hove e prodotto da Robert Fox, lo spettacolo Lazarus ha debuttato il 7 dicembre 2015 al New York Theatre Workshop, ottenendo un grande successo di critica. Secondo il New York Times, “gelidi lampi di estasi squarciano come supernove la confusione e le tenebre di Lazarus, il nuovo musical costruito intorno ai brani di David Bowie, che è delizia per gli occhi e piacere per le orecchie”, mentre Rolling Stone l’ha definito “una grande opera surrealista… il meglio del teatro in cui si nuota nel latte, si annusa lingerie e si tracanna gin”.
